‘A Rough Guide’ – Horse Guards Road, SW1 (1845)

A rickshaw driver (sporting a ‘Where London Comes To Life’jacket) stops at the kerb and leaves his charges (a mother and son) whilst he goes to investigate any clues for information on a statue they had spotted. ‘Clive of India’. Cigarette in hand, he climbs the steps and surveys the base of the figure for any insight. Returning to his customers he begins a sketchy outline of this enigmatic character. Perhaps as vague as the demise of this stalwart of the East India Company?
