‘Smoke & Mirrors’ – The Queen’s Walk, SE1

Walking through the contested space. A stark contrast between the land grab (a kind of colonial commercial carve up of prime terra firma) and the untamed channel. A waterfront, sterile and pristine, overseen by security staff lest any regulation be contravened. The fine line between the attractive (litter-free) vista and an area taking Singapore as a model for inspiration. Tourists indulging in selfies, with Tower Bridge as a backdrop, blissfully unaware of the ‘plastic bag trees’ (supermarket and takeaway foliage) swaying in the bitter wind downstream further east. The river as a coffee brown malevolent force revealing the decaying fabric of past wharves at low tide. Time will (always) tell…
